I couldn't help but be amused by this video put out by GreenPeace chiding Facebook for using coal power to provide energy to their data centres.
It should be noted, as it was in the New York Times blog post that pointed me to this clip, that although the region does indeed have a larger percentage of electricity generated from coal, that being located in this area allows the data centre to use "free cooling". Essentially "free cooling" means using atmospheric air to cool the data centre, which can only be done safely with outside air temperatures within a particular temperature and humidity range. "Free cooling" can result in data centers saving half (or even significantly more than half) of their electrical bill.
