How to get along for 500 days alone together
"It never ceases to amaze us, but the most common question Rolf and I got after our winter-over, when we spent 15 months on the Antarctic Peninsula, nine of which were in total solitude, was: Why didn't you two kill each other?"
Did Black People Own Slaves?
This is, of course, talking of slavery in US history (though slavery has occurred far more broadly in world history). Unsurprisingly the answer is yes. But that's just the start of the story... and occasionally it gets a bit weirder than you might expect - e.g. the Confederacy appointing black officers being the first of the two armies to appoint officers who were black.
There Probably Isn't Any Neutral Way to Report on Homosexuality sparked A Gay, Celibate Christian's Conflicted Take on Same-Sex Marriage
A bit of that latter piece: "six years later, support and compassion are the only things I have experienced within the communities of Christians of which I have been a part. If I'm being fair, I am still selective about who I tell my story to (I eagerly await the day when homosexual Christians will not be afraid to fully share their lives with others), but have been amazed at how little the revelation of my attractions has affected my relationships. In many cases, it has strengthened them. And my story is not an isolated one: I have met a significant number of Christians in the same boat, struggling, hurting, and yet believing in God's deep and abiding love for them. How does this affect the way that I view the issue of gay marriage?" Both highlighted bits are worth thinking about. A reminder that such people exist - with that previous example also popping up in the The Atlantic.
