What is an engineer? (And how much does this post confuse science and engineering?)

From a piece entitled The Creative Side Of Science:

... working together to create new things is part of engineering, and Carlos Contreras of Intel said young people need to get that message. He said they often don’t know that engineering can be a creative process — or even what engineering is, exactly.

'In a survey of teens, we find that they have high regard for engineering as a profession, but don’t know what engineers do or how much they make,' he said.

In Pursuit of Nissan, a Jobs Lesson for the Tech Industry?
Why Tennessee? "It was far from Detroit and the United Auto Workers — and the Japanese wanted to work without what they saw as union interference." Add to this workers in the overseas workshops being willing to put up with harder working conditions and I'm a bit doubtful about tech manufacturing in the US as a big source of jobs. (If robots replace workers, though, repatriation of manufacturing to the US might be more likely). See also the related Room for Debate piece.
Mississippi church apologizes for refusing to let black couple marry
One indicator that this may primarily be a face-saving exercise rather than a genuine apology: "the couple said Monday they knew nothing of the apology until a reporter called"
The poem that won Olympic gold
"For some decades, literature was actually an Olympic medal event." More here.
I Won't Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here's Why.
I don't think that the article highlights as much as it should the fact that both the author's companies are focused upon writing documentation. Still, I think that being able to write properly is generally a good sign of a few other things as the author also asserts.

A Confederacy of Bachelors
Should you expect to see living arrangements like this becoming more common in the future? "... meet the brotherhood of Fortress Astoria: Danaher Dempsey, Luke Crane, Rick Brown and Shyaporn Theerakulstit, best friends and artists. They have no children, no linear career histories, no readily disposable savings. The four men, all heterosexual, approaching 40 and never married, have lived together for 18 years, give or take a revolving guest roommate, cohabitating in spaces like an East Village walk-up, a Chelsea loft and, now, a converted office space in Queens."

Sex Doesn't Always Sell: Why Female Olympians Fail in Advertisements
"The study makes the troubling accusation that female consumers are jealous of spokeswomen who are made out to be paragons of strength and attractiveness, suggesting that's one reason why ads focused on female athletes' physicality are unsuccessful. "A female looking at an attractive female, as opposed to saying 'I want to be like that,' actually has a negative reaction," said Robinson. Originally, the authors wanted to call the study "Guys Want to Be Like Mike, Girls Want Mia to Be Like Them." ... middle-aged women have trouble connecting with younger female athletes, while teen girls react to images like Danica Patrick's GoDaddy commercials by saying, 'That's like seeing my mom in a bikini.'"

Why you need to worry about context (and editing)...

This is an example of editing, but it probably crops up more in practice as joining bits and pieces of an interview together to make it look like someone is claiming something different than the really are. Here you can see the backgrounds switching strangely, but try just listening to the audio...
