Those annoying 1-in-4 claims

Been seeing more of posters advocating that 1-in-4 women in college are sexual assaulted during their time there. Compare to some official data:

For 2010, the US Census reported roughly 6.7 million women enrolled in post-secondary education.

For 2010, the US Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics Criminal Victimization report estimated 188,380 instances of rape/sexual assault (both reported and unreported).

You do the math.

(US higher education institution are obliged by law to release local reports of crime, and you can search for statistics online. Less than 10,000 sexual assaults connected in any way to any US higher education institution were reported for 2010).

A concert interrupted...

Latest Lamp-Free Projectors With Texas Instruments DLP Technology Bring Brighter, 3D-Ready Projection to Your Pupils With Virtually No Maintenance
I've been waiting for more companies to start bringing out these bulb-less projectors - maybe I'll finally have an excuse to replace my 720p TV with a 1080p project. Basically the latest bulb-free (laser/LED hybrid) projectors seem to offer good light with no several-hundred-dollar replacement bulbs required and little to no warmup time requirements. One interesting thing also noted in the story is that there's a claim being made that learning with 3D illustrations leads to significant improvements in both the acquisition of knowledge and it's retention. What do you think of the claim? Personally I'd advice taking it with a grain of (kosher - i.e. large-grained) salt given that it appears to have been backed by projector manufacturers who've got a vested interest in selling more 3D projectors.
Humor ability reveals intelligence, predicts mating success, and is higher in males
Was Christopher Hitchens right that women just aren't as funny as men? This study seems to suggest so - although I question its dependence on college students as a great sample population to study such things.
Whittier Terrace Associates v. Hampshire Massachusetts 532 N.E.2d 712 (Mass. 1989)
Is this the crazy-cat-lady exception to tenancy laws? "Defendant was a person with a psychiatric disability and living in public housing. Defendant claimed to have an emotional and psychological dependence on her cat. The court held that the housing authority discriminated against defendant under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act for failure to waive the no pets policy as a reasonable accommodation for the mental disability. The court noted that there must be a narrow exception 'to the rigid application of a no-pet rule, involving no untoward collateral consequences,' because the handicapped person could fully receive the benefits of the program if provided the accommodation." In what circumstance couldn't this be used, assuming that you shop around to find a willing psychiatrist? I do not like cats...
Chef Has Diabetes, and Some Say ‘I Told You So’
"Ms. Deen, 64, ran a restaurant in Savannah, Ga., for years before she became nationally known through her cooking shows on the Food Network, reveling in dishes like deep-fried macaroni and cheese and Krispy Kreme doughnut bread pudding. But she said in an interview with the 'Today' co-host Al Roker, 'I’ve always encouraged moderation.'" Julia Child was known to say the same - I'm curious how much the diets of the two differed in fat content.

Do People Become More Conservative as They Age?
"Contrary to popular belief, people generally do not become more conservative as they age. Seniors often describe themselves as being more tolerant and more open to new ideas in their old age. "
The Two-Minus-One Pregnancy
One bioethicist quoted by the New York Times: "In an odd way, having more choices actually places a much greater burden on women, because we become the creators of our circumstance, whereas, before, we were the recipients of them. I’m not saying we should have less choices; I’m saying choices are not always as liberating and empowering as we hope they will be."

The comments on roundabouts are kind of interesting: "A 2005 study found that roundabouts reduced rush hour delays over left-turn-reliant intersections by up to 93 percent, and congestion by up to 83 percent. A 2000 study that focused on safety saw a 38 percent reduction in total crash rates and a massive 90 percent reduction in crashes that resulted in either life-threatening or fatal injuries. ... by reducing your reliance on the brakes, they can also reduce annual fuel consumption at [an] intersection by more than 20,000 gallons"
