Calgary to Banff (130 kilometres of driving) in three minutes

Today's three minute dose of procrastination is brought to you by time-lapse video:

I used to live rather close to the starting point of this video clip - Wendys (which shares a parking lot with the Robin's Donuts and the Shell) was a 15 or 20 minute walk from where I lived for a few months.

Research suggests that teenagers and mornings don't mix

Starting as early as next fall, students at one Toronto high school will have the luxury of sleeping in, with classes beginning as late as 11:30 a.m. – or about 2 1/2 hours after teens in the rest of the city.

... "There's been a lot of research on the adolescent brain ... that indicates kids' brain patterns are such that the early morning is not an optimal time," she said. It's not that high school students are lazy. During the teen years, the chemical responsible for sleepiness is secreted later at night and turns off later in the morning, leading to a "sleep phase delay."

... U.S. studies on late-start schools have found fewer dropouts, less absenteeism and better grades. Teens also say they eat breakfast more often and feel more alert. (from an article in the Toronto Star)

I wonder if this phenomenon sticks around throughout part of the twenties as well. I guess it must be further confirmation that a certain individual in high school who wore an "I don't do mornings" t-shirt but really did do mornings really was a little odd.

The role of the web

"When you give up control, you gain influence." - Mark Driscoll

In some commentary earlier this year, Justin Taylor suggested that the internet was a prominent factor in the resurgence of Calvinism. By and large it seems as though people falling under the Calvinist umbrella have been amongst the best in terms of making things freely and easily available.

Today, Desiring God, one such organization, posted a statement on its website about providing open access. Now if only folks in control of translations like the NIV (with its relatively restrictive copyright policy) would pay attention to it.

Dave's new display

I picked up a new monitor over the weekend. A 24 inch widescreen with a native resolution of 1920x1200 gives me a little more screen space to work with. Here's a photo to give you an idea of size (ignore the messy desk):
