A new version of Train Simulator is just around the bend

I discovered today that Microsoft Game Studios has started working on a new version of Train Simulator based on the new Flight Simulator X engine. I also noticed on one of the developer's blogs that they went on a research trip to the WCRA in Squamish and took a picture of 2860.

I've seen this news for a week or so on TrainSim.com. As a number of posters there have stated, I'll believe it when I see it. There have been so many new simulators on the way that have been cancelled (Train Simulator 2 was one of them) or put on hold that it's hard to get excited. Kuju, the company that made the original for Microsoft has its own coming, there's been a couple others, but the one I'm waiting for is TrainMaster Train Simulator, the new version of TrainMaster 4. The public version is on hold, pending development of the commercial version.

I'm not crazy...oh, wait, nevermind.

Believe it or not, I have fond memories of the original Railroad Tycoon. The new versions may have looked snazzier but they just didn't interest me very much.

The original Railroad Tycoon is now available as a free download. I'll dig up the link later, unless Dave beats me to it (he's the one who sent me the link in the first place).

I'm not crazy...oh, wait, nevermind.

This is technically Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, it is very slightly different from the version I used to play on school computers at lunch time (from a floppy disc, no less!)

I'm not crazy...oh, wait, nevermind.

Have you played this version at all since it became available as a free release?

Hmmm...let's see. Just a little, maybe!

The latest installment in the series, Sid Meier's Railroads, was a vast improvement over the previous ones IMHO, though there's still some things that annoyed me, like not being able to transfer loads between trains.
