Is Daylight Saving Time Bad for Your Health?
Tonight is the time to put forward your alarm clock. The result of this is an annual peak in suicides and an increased risk of heart attack.
Dark drama Incendies dominates Genie Awards
I thought that this was a really well done movie when I saw it at a film festival in Sept./Oct. 2010 prior to all the hype it's attracted in recent months. As the title of the article notes, the film is a bit dark, but that doesn't mean that it isn't worth watching.
'Double dipping' child support to be appealed
"A Toronto lawyer is planning to appeal a judge's landmark ruling that ordered a biological father to pay full child support despite the fact the boy's stepfather already does." - the article also notes that the biological father has been cut off from his child.
New Study on Hate Crimes against Muslims Contradicts Claims of Islamophobia in America
"... the study shows that hate crimes against Muslim Americans, measured by the categories of incidents, offenses or victims, have remained relatively low with a downward trend since 2001. For example, in 2009, Jewish victims of hate crimes outnumbered Muslim victims by more than 8 to 1 (1,132 Jewish victims to 132 Muslim victims). From 2000 through 2009, for every one hate crime incident against a Muslim, there were six hate crime incidents against Jewish victims (1,580 Muslim incidents versus 9,692 Jewish incidents). Even in 2001, total anti-Muslim incidents, offenses and victims remained approximately half of the corresponding anti-Jewish totals." The one thing that I did scan the report to estimate was the size of the Jewish and Muslim populations - it seems that the Jewish population may be at most twice the size of the Muslim population, although Jewish is likely to be an ethnic identifier rather than a religious one it would seem.

Om nom n-om(elets)

Been eating more of these for breakfast in recent weeks. Goes well with a cup of coffee using my new french-press/burr grinder combo rather than the drip coffee that I was previously making from pre-ground beans.

Canucks to move AHL affiliate to Abbotsford?
I went to see the Moose/Heat play once and it was a rather full house - as the article notes it looks like this is something that the market might be able to support.
Child-support orders don't always follow child
Even though a child had relocated to live with his father, the father was still being required to pay monthly child support to the mother. This is hardly the fault of the mother in this instance as she'd even signed an affidavit in support of this father, testifying that the change had taken place but apparently even that wasn't enough. Women In Tech Make More Money And Land Better Jobs Than Men
This is based on the time to first job once graduating from school and the average starting salary they obtain rather than a long-term approach that might also consider different choices that these women may make and possible discrimination they might face.
Shifting spring: Arctic plankton blooming up to 50 days earlier now
On one hand the article states that "Ecologists worry that the early blooms could unravel the region's ecosystem and 'lead to crashes of the food web'" and that "[t]he timing of this sequential harvest is programmed into the reproductive cycles of many animals." There's been some research on cod populations and the timing of the plankton bloom in the North Atlantic on which to base such claims, but on the other hand the article also notes that little information is available about Artic populations. "the U.S. body overseeing fishing in the region, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, banned commercial fishing in the Arctic Ocean, citing a lack of knowledge about how many - or even what kind - of fish live there." It seems that there's enough information to express concern and research further, but at the same point in time the research doesn't appear that conclusive due to the relative lack of information.

I'm reading a book

I've actually got about a half dozen books that I'm partially through reading at the moment.

I'd classify the above as more than a little weird but...
