"There are no statistics about how many Afghan girls masquerade as boys. But when asked, Afghans of several generations can often tell a story of a female relative, friend, neighbor or co-worker who grew up disguised as a boy."
No doubt the rest of you are all thinking that this explains a lot. The actual paper is entitled "Negative Emotional Valence Is Associated With Non-Right-Handedness and Increased Imbalance of Hemispheric Activation as Measured by Tympanic Membrane Temperature," although somehow I like the Daily Mail title better. BTW, what's with calling left-handedness "non-right-handedness"?
Pig parts wind up getting used in a lot more stuff than just meat to eat. Watch the video for an inventory. The presenter apparently found 185 different products using pig parts.
"For Mr. Dennis ... the challenge is convincing those around him that bugs are tasty, and good for you, too—high in protein, low in fat, cheap and good for the environment."
"As worldwide population increases by 40 percent over the next 40 years, sparsely populated Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and the northern United States will become formidable economic powers and migration magnets ..."
I couldn't help but be amused by this video put out by GreenPeace chiding Facebook for using coal power to provide energy to their data centres.
It should be noted, as it was in the New York Times blog post that pointed me to this clip, that although the region does indeed have a larger percentage of electricity generated from coal, that being located in this area allows the data centre to use "free cooling". Essentially "free cooling" means using atmospheric air to cool the data centre, which can only be done safely with outside air temperatures within a particular temperature and humidity range. "Free cooling" can result in data centers saving half (or even significantly more than half) of their electrical bill.
