Survival of the wittiest

Forget the big car, the big heart, or even the big house. The quickest way to a woman's heart is the ability to poke fun at yourself.

... "Many studies show that a sense of humour is sexually attractive, especially to women, but we've found that self-deprecating humour is the most attractive of all," said Greengross, whose Dissing Oneself: The Sexual Attractiveness of Self-Deprecating Humour, will be published later this month in Evolutionary Psychology.

But this kind of humour is not to be confused with lacking in confidence, he warns. "It is a risky form of humour because it can draw attention to one's real faults, thereby diminishing the self-deprecator's status in the eyes of others," the New Mexico University scientist said. So what we want is a man who can poke fun at himself, but who knows his own mind, too.

... "Self-deprecating humour can be an especially reliable indicator, not only of general intelligence and verbal creativity, but also of moral virtues such as humility," according to Mr Greengross.

What will a dollar buy ten years in the future?

This concerns the U.S. dollar, which is probably less stable that the Canadian although the Canadian is heavily tied in to that of its southern neighbour. Still an interesting thing to watch if you've got half an hour:

This is another reason why I haven't been able to decide what sort of TFSA to create, and I'm running out of time to do that this year.

The Sudoku diet

Sitting in your favourite armchair doing a crossword or Sudoku does not sound like a particularly effective way to use up calories.

But .... [t]ackling puzzles for an hour, it seems, can burn more calories than are contained in many biscuits. ... Doing puzzles and quizzes burns an average of 90 calories every hour, they say - while a chocolate chip cookie contains an average 56 calories, a custard cream 57 calories and a jammy dodger 85 calories.

Researcher Tim Forrester, from cannyminds.com, explained: 'Our brains require 0.1 calories every minute simply to survive. When we do something challenging such as a puzzle or a quiz we can burn through 1.5 calories every minute.'

Cheaters

What did you find was the No. 1 reason men cheat?
I think most people ascribe to the theory that men cheat for sex. Women are being told that unless they are unbelievable sexy and have a Ph.D. in prostitution education then the husband is going to cheat. But when the results came in [from my study] only 8 percent of cheaters said that sexual dissatisfaction was a primary contributor [in cheating] and only 12 percent said the mistress was better looking or in better shape than their wives. It really started to show a completely different pattern than what most expect. In fact, the majority — 48 percent — said that the cheating was about an emotional disconnection.
