Film is dead...

This week I realized that I still had a roll of film sitting in my F65. I had tried to finish it off on the trip to Golden in December, but the battery was dead then so the camera wasn't working. After that little incident, I forgot about the roll until just a few days ago and tossed in a couple of spare batteries that I had kicking around.

Without further ado: Photos dating from April (or even earlier) in 2006 to a shot of my bananas a couple of days ago.

Copyright law strikes once again

One of the ideas that I've been thinking about of late is the conversion of some older works into audiobook format. One such book that I was examining is Machen's Christianity and Liberalism, published in 1923. This book appears to be in the public domain in Canada, where copyright terms are listed on Wikipedia as life of author plus 50 years. As such it seems that I could do whatever I want with that text in Canada.

The situation is not quite the same as far as the US is concerned, where 1923 is a special date in copyright law. Works published in 1923 or later have longer copyright terms (although in some cases copyright renewal was required). This means that this same book appears not to be in the public domain in the US. And this would be a problem, as my website is hosted in the US and I suspect that many of those who might be interested in this material in audiobook form might would also be located there. Probably enough of a showstopper to cause me to look elsewhere for something to convert...

A dose of photos

I tossed a bunch of photos online of the past weekend with Roger in town.

The same brother who specifically requested an electric toothbrush for our December gift exchange left me with a lifetime's supply of photos of me brushing my teeth. Thus I figured that it was only fitting that I get him to pose with his toothpaste.

In some sense I guess that it was a good thing that Roger only stayed for a weekend - I was starting to run out of body parts left to bruise. We spent a fair bit of time clustered on or around ice surfaces, and my ability is such that me on the ice might be better described as an exercise in falling than skating. One of the reasons this particular weekend had been selected was due to a certain event that we had tickets to. That would be both the second Canucks' game that I've been at as well as also being the second Flames' games that I've attended. I think that it took Roger a few moments to get used to hearing a crowd chanting "Go Flames Go" instead of "Go Canucks Go".

December 30th railfanning report

The last Saturday of 2006 seemed like a good day to head out in search of trains in the Fraser Canyon. It was a pretty good day all around. The final tallies at the end of the day were 32 trains, with 66 locos, and 54 photos. Departure was at 06:38, arrival back home at 19:40, 614.9km later. My first stop was at Tim Hortons, left there at 06:47 and headed east. Specific sighting reports are inside.
