"Social and behavioral science is frequently shaped and driven by politics and ideology"
That title is a section of one of the briefs submitted to the Supreme Court on the issue of same-sex marriage. I'm not a fan of Mark Regnerus's research but those opposing him appear to engage in research methods at least as bad as anything they criticize in his. This post is somewhat in response to the APA's brief on the same subject.
You can find a criticism of the sorts of studies cited by the APA here in a 2012 journal publication which notes problems with:
(1) homogeneous sampling, (2) absence of comparison groups, (3) comparison group characteristics, (4) contradictory data, (5) the limited scope of children’s outcomes studied, (6) paucity of long-term outcome data, and (7) lack of APA-urged statistical power.
It's conclusion?
... strong assertions, including those made by the APA, [are] not empirically warranted.
