Do you save by buying bargain brands?

The Times Online recently had an article out about the composition of cheap, no-name foods in Britain. Amongst the things they found were sausage rolls with just 6% pork, cheese slices that contained a mere 11% cheese, and chicken and vegetable pies containing 9% chicken and 2% vegetables.

Professor Tom Sanders, head of nutritional sciences at King’s College London, said: “This is cheap, second-rate food ingredients masquerading as real food. They are heavily processed foods using added fat, water and sugar. People tempted by the low prices should look carefully at the labels.”
