Was Having Kids Ever a Paying Venture?
You might be able to make a case for kids as historically having been somewhat of a "retirement plan" (although the journal article linked in the post begs to differ). Still it's a worthwhile question to ponder. Should you always be driven by the economics of a situation?
Want Salad With That? Make It Fries

Don't be rattled by the baby guilt trip
The now-deposed (in what seemed an ugly fashion) former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd got some feedback on comments he made on the population aging issue. The author of the article isn't a fan and although I think that she made some worthwhile points she also seems a little bit disconnected from reality.

The salad and fries article is kind of strange. Do you think you'd be more likely to order fries than salad in that situation?

It seems to be primarily a question of whether or not you can safely generalize from a study involving a batch of college students to the world as a whole. I imagine that it's been studied fairly extensively, particularly by larger restaurant chains. That said, a lot of what research might exist is likely internal to the restaurants involved.

Some related websites which look at the psychology of eating:
The Small Plate Movement, Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab, MindlessEating.org.

They study somewhat odd things - e.g. how the shape of the glass changes how much of a drink a person is likely to consume. I actually "read" a book (the audio version) by a guy associated with these sites a while back... kinda interesting stuff.
